Head Office is based in North Ryde however services extend across Sydney, Central Coast, Hunter, Mid North Coast, Blue Mountains and Northern Rivers regions.

About the Opportunity

New Horizons has been successful in increasing service delivery to meet the needs of the community and have an exciting opportunity for committed and experienced Full Time Community Support Workers to join our Community Justice Program (CJP) based in Guildford Sydney.The Community Justice Program aims to prevent clients from reoffending and to allow clients to live independently in the community. The role will be to support clients with an intellectual disability who have recently been released from prison. 

This position will require unique people to provide support across a 7 day roster, with shifts also including emergency respite, to met the needs of the clients in the program. It is expected to that to be successful in this position, you will be available to work across the 7 day roster. 

About You

New Horizons is seeking empathetic individuals with experience in the disability sector including intellectual disability and/or mental illness, as well as demonstrated experience working with people with various offending and challenging behaviours. To be successful in this role you will posses strong documentation and reporting skills with the ability to work effectively both in a small team and unsupervised. 

Knowledge and understanding of case management and case work principles drawn from practical experience in human services, vocational rehabilitation, personal support, social or community welfare, correctional services or similar is essential. The ability to work closely with people and their families who have experienced: mental illness, disability, suffered or sustained trauma or abuse, experienced correctional facilities or considered at risk is preferred.

This role requires your ability to communicate and problem solve effectively with vulnerable people. Organising your time efficiently is key in enabling you to build and maintain collaborative relationships.

The successful candidates will also need to be computer literate and will ideally have an understanding & commitment to Disability Service Standards and National Standards for Mental Health. In addition, a Certificate III level qualification in Disability or Mental Health discipline will be highly regarded.

A current NSW driver's licence is essential to this role as you will be driving to and from shifting work sites. A First Aid Certificate is highly desirable and successful candidates will be subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record check.

A sound understanding of the complexity of Aboriginal traditional culture and the history of the area, and the impact that culture, including social and emotional issues and history, has on the provision of services to Aboriginal clients and their families, will be highly regarded.

You will have the ability to proactively manage a caseload through the provision of individual support to address needs such as personal care, daily living, recreation and leisure, community access, education and employment as well as providing links and referrals to a range of services.

Most importantly you will have an enthusiasm for working with people with disabilities and a genuine desire to help others and improve the quality of life. This is a challenging role and you will need to be prepared.
